ISPS Handa New Zealand Open Tees off at Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak, New Zealand’s original winter playground, was the scene of a sunrise tee off as pro golfers and competitors Ben Campbell and Dimitrios Papadatos kicked off the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open this morning (March 8th, 2017).

Coronet Peak is one of four iconic New Zealand tourism operators that together are a major sponsor of the popular Pro Am golfing event, held annually in Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital.

With spectacular views from Coronet Peak over the Wakatipu Basin toward Millbrook, it could not have been a more fitting way to kick off the tournament.

“Coronet Peak is proud to be a part of this fantastic event, participating with a number of other sponsors to showcase Queenstown’s premiere attractions,” said Nigel Kerr, Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager.

“As New Zealand’s original ski field, loved by locals and international visitors, the sponsorship of a popular sporting event on rolling terrain and with spectacular views is a perfect fit.”

The pros were choppered in to the landing site on the edge of Coronet Peak by Over the Top Helicopters to pair up with amateur golfers Mark Sommerville and Malcolm Judd, both Coronet Peak staff.

The two teams teed off at around 8am near the Meadows Chairlift. The Pros pipped the Ams at the post in the best-of-three competition but Coronet Peak’s Mark Somerville was stoked to get the closest to the hole.

Nigel said biodegradable eco-golf balls were used to ensure any balls left unfound will decompose before the winter season kicks off.

“Coronet Peak will look very different in a few months when it’s covered in snow, with a lot of happy skiers and snowboarders where we are right now”

Two of those people will be our competition winners from this year’s tournament. As well as prizes from the other sponsors they will get ski rental, day passes and lessons right here at Coronet Peak. They’ll be able to see exactly where Ben and the guys teed off.
